Who are Hanby Horticultural?
Hanby Horticultural is a garden design and build and specialist horticultural company run by Aidan Hanby.
I grew up in a house with a beautiful cottage garden in rural North Shropshire and this has left me with an indelible understanding of the pleasure that a beautiful and wildlife-rich garden can bring.
In the early 2000s I trained as a horticulturalist and took my first steps into the industry.
Since then I have worked in all areas, including; management of gardens and estates, arboriculture and forestry, garden design and landscape construction.
Having experience in all these sectors gives me a very good understanding of how all aspects of a garden relate to one another. This helps inform me as to the best practical and aesthetic approaches to take.
Depending on the scale of the project, I either work alone or with a team of like-minded, experienced and trusted colleagues.
The Philosophy
Gardens should be beautiful and relaxing, without requiring excessive input of labour or chemicals. They should blend seamlessly into the wider landscape and be a haven for wildlife.
Core Beliefs:
More pleasure and ownership is achieved from a garden if a person learns more about how their garden functions and how to look after it.
We always encourage client involvement at every stage and are keen to promote horticultural learning.
A garden should be as easy to maintain as possible.
We believe that ease of maintenance should be designed into a garden through careful choices of materials and plants and thoughtful decisions as to how to these materials and plants are used.
Every garden and client are unique and should be treated as such.
A garden should sit fluidly in with its surroundings, particularly in a rural context.
Gardens should be a haven for wildlife.
Planting and design decisions always take into consideration potential benefits to nature.
For instance, the selection of nectar rich plant cultivars for pollinating insects.
