Densely Planted Haven

Bringing a garden alive with multi-layered planting

The Brief

The clients approached us with a blank canvas of a garden that had been stripped of all previous features and vegetation as part of renovation and building works to the house. The brief was to
create something floriferous and beautiful and relatively low maintenance that would soften the view of the neighbouring houses without overtly doing so. It was desired that the planting would be the star of the show with there being no other distracting landscape features.

Project Breakdown

Challenges:

  • The garden is very visible from the house and surroundings all year round and so it was essential that the planting would have all year round impact and interest.
  • The front garden slopes away from the house towards a road and other properties, making thoughtful plant choices even more vital
  • The area of planting was to be relatively large and so ensuring that it would be low maintenance was key.

Solutions:

• The planting was carefully chosen to give colour and structure throughout the year. A backbone of stipa grasses was used to give movement and act as a foil to the flowering plants. Dense perennial planting and selected bulbs were then added to complete composition.
• Relative height and form of the planting was considered to make the most of the views beyond the garden whilst also distracting from the view of the other properties
• Low maintenance was built into the planting at the design stage by using species that were robust and long-lived without being excessively competitive. Planting density was high and a thick organic mulch was applied after planting to prevent the invasion of weeds and substantially reduce the need for irrigation during establishment.

The Details

The design and planting has created a lush garden that changes with the seasons and evolves every year. It has also become a haven for wildlife with many species of bee and butterfly regularly visiting the garden.
