Large Naturalistic Garden

Blending Modern Living Into an Ancient Quarry Landscape

The Brief

Our clients owned a modern home converted from a bungalow, dramatically set into an old quarry with sweeping views into a wooded valley. The garden’s previous layout and materials felt cluttered and disconnected from the rugged natural surroundings. The brief was to simplify the garden and help the house settle more naturally into its quarry setting, allowing the surrounding geology and views to shine.

Project Breakdown

Challenges:

  • The property sat within a dramatic quarry landscape, requiring sensitive design to avoid competing with its natural drama.
  • Steep driveways and changes in level posed logistical and aesthetic challenges.
  • The garden featured a mix of jarring materials and cluttered features detracting from the quarry’s natural stone and views.
  • Safety measures were necessary to prevent vehicles from leaving the track, without introducing visually intrusive barriers.
  • Planting needed to balance naturalistic softness while preserving sightlines to the valley views.

Solutions:

  • Removed excessive and visually jarring materials to simplify the space and create a more harmonious connection with the landscape.
  • Revealed and cleaned the old quarry face, exposing beautiful stone strata and celebrating the site’s geological character.
  • Installed gabions, stone walls, and carefully placed boulders to stabilize slopes and prevent vehicle overrun, ensuring safety without sacrificing aesthetics.
  • Employed naturalistic planting schemes at the rear of the house to soften the quarry stone, ensuring the planting felt organic rather than overly designed.
  • Constructed bespoke planters on the other side of the house, planted with cultivars chosen for their pollinator value and seasonal interest, while remaining subtle enough not to detract from the dramatic valley views.

The Details

This project was a unique opportunity to merge modern architecture with the raw drama of an old quarry setting. The original garden, cluttered with an assortment of materials and disconnected features, was stripped back to reveal the stunning natural stonework of the quarry walls. Cleaning and exposing the quarry face unveiled beautiful stone strata, transforming it into a striking backdrop rather than a hidden boundary.

Gabions, new stone walls, and strategically placed boulders now secure the steep terrain while maintaining a natural aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the quarry environment. The planting palette was kept deliberately naturalistic, echoing the surrounding woodland and quarry flora, softening hard lines without feeling artificial.

On the house’s opposite side, planters were introduced to provide structured planting areas without compromising views. These were filled with cultivars chosen for their wildlife benefits, colour, and seasonal dynamics, creating interest throughout the year while respecting the breathtaking valley vistas.

The result is a garden that feels like an extension of the quarry itself—a harmonious, understated setting where house and landscape coexist beautifully.
