Small Courtyard

Transforming an Awkward Space into a Mediterranean-Inspired Courtyard Retreat

The Brief

The client approached us to revitalise a small courtyard that was previously underused due to awkward changes in level and a dominating high boundary wall. The brief was to create a functional, inviting family space for entertaining and relaxation, with a broadly Mediterranean feel. Key to the design was finding ways to soften the impact of the tall boundary wall and bring warmth and charm to the space.

Project Breakdown

Challenges:

  • The courtyard featured awkward, uneven levels, making the space difficult to use.
  • A long, high boundary wall loomed over the courtyard, creating a sense of enclosure and visual imbalance.
  • The space was relatively small, requiring clever design to avoid it feeling cluttered once fitted out for entertaining.
  • The client desired a Mediterranean feel, which had to be achieved in a limited, enclosed space and in the UK climate.

Solutions:

  • Extended and raised existing stone walls to create a single, cohesive level throughout the courtyard, maximising usable space for seating and entertaining.
  • Enhanced and expanded the existing sleeper raised beds, providing structure and additional planting opportunities to soften hard lines.
  • Installed a substantial, chunky pergola as the courtyard’s main architectural focal point, drawing the eye inward and reducing the visual dominance of the high boundary wall.
  • Selected materials and finishes that evoked a Mediterranean aesthetic, bringing warmth, texture, and a relaxed holiday feel to the space.

The Details

This transformation turned a neglected and uneven courtyard into a vibrant, functional outdoor room, perfect for family life and social gatherings.

By extending and raising the existing stone walls, we established a single, unified level, immediately making the space more accessible and versatile. The expanded sleeper raised beds introduced opportunities for lush planting, helping to soften edges and bring life and colour into the courtyard.

The installation of a robust pergola became the defining feature, adding both architectural interest and practical benefits such as partial shade and a sense of enclosure without feeling oppressive. The pergola cleverly diverts attention from the tall boundary wall, shifting focus inward to the inviting space below.

Materials and design choices were guided by a Mediterranean influence, with textures, colours, and planting selections that evoke sun-drenched courtyards while being well-suited to the local climate. The result is a warm, characterful courtyard where the family can relax, entertain, and enjoy their garden as an extension of their living space.
